“Most of us have two lives. The life we live and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands RESISTANCE” - Steven Pressfield
Are you tired? Frustrated? Do you beat yourself up for not taking control?
Have you promised you will do something to change your fitness? Perhaps tomorrow? It just doesn’t seem to happen, does it? It’s not “willpower’ or “genetics” or even being too busy… It’s RESISTANCE.
Know your enemy.
What is resistance?.. To paraphrase Steven Pressfield from THE WAR OF ART… Resistance is a force of nature. It acts objectively. Resistance is not out to get you personally. It doesn’t know who you are and doesn’t care. Resistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing what needs to be done. It will lie, cheat and steal. It will bully and cajole. Resistance has no conscience. It will pledge anything to get a deal, then double cross you when your back is turned. We’re wrong if we think we’re the only ones struggling with resistance. Everyone who has a body struggles with resistance.
When you are struggling, perhaps with being unfit and unhealthy, or with poor body image, everything suffers. Your happiness is the first casualty. Work performance, family, the choices to not be involved in life. Missing out. It won’t get better without action. Action overcomes resistance.
The first action is to do something, anything to take control. Small changes.
Resistance is everywhere. It comes from within, from your work, your friends and family...even society at large… giving you false information and unrealistic images... All conspiring to keep you confused and down.
"The fitness and nutrition world is a breeding ground for obsessive-compulsive behavior. The irony is that many of the things people worry about have no impact on results either way, and therefore aren't worth an ounce of concern."- Alan Aragon
Lots of people think it is all or nothing. A punch in the face. Too hard. That you must completely alter your diet and turn your life upside down. As if you must start at level 10 on day 1. Nothing about that is true, in fact, start slow, and meet yourself right where you are, create your fitness habit at your own pace. Incrementally overcoming resistance. Building a habit is the first step in change and reaching your goals. The change will only come with change. You just have to take that first small action step. In fact, start right this second! Stand up or squat down, jump up and down… any action at all. That’s how you start!
Small actions add up.
Consciously building new behaviors and habits. Overcoming old ones, one step at a time. Acting in the present moment. Showing up today, knowing the future will just follow along with your plan...
Before you know it, you have developed a habit of regular fitness training and better nutrition. Now it’s not only easier, it’s fun! The resistance you felt in the beginning is still present, but you are in charge now. You are well on your way to making lasting changes toward a happier, healthier more enjoyable life. What is holding you back?
Can you now recognize the enemy is JUST resistance?
What small step can you take to begin to overcome?
