Why do you workout?

Have you ever asked yourself WHY?

"Why do I show up three, four, five days a week to work on my fitness?"

Whenever I have a new person start at MadLab, I always ask them, "Why are you here? What are you looking for??

Usually I get uncertain-sounding replies like, "Um...well, I just want to be more fit," or, "I...ah...I want to get stronger," or "I want to lose weight."

Then I ask WHY? Why do you want to be more fit? Why do you want to be stronger?

From there, more often than not, people can't articulate exactly why they want to be leaner or fitter or stronger... They just think they should be, but they aren't sure why it's important to them.

I believe (contrary to Tom insisting that fitness isn't emotional for him) there's an emotional reason that drives us to be more fit. Maybe you were chubby and bullied as a child, and being leaner and fitter at 30 than you were at 15 is your way of saying, 'F-off bullies from my past.' Or maybe you were never athletic when you were young, and being able to do pull-ups in your 40s empowers you and gives you confidence in your physical abilities, which spills over and brings confidence to the rest of your life.

Daryl Jones has been showing up diligently for more than 8 years. WHY?

The point is, for fitness to become a habit in your life—something that's going to be a staple in your life until you're 80-plus years old (which is the ultimate goal, right?)—I think it's important that you look into yourself, and maybe into your past, and figure out WHY. Why do you show up multiple times a week and push yourself to do things that scare you? Why fitness is important to you? Why do you want to get better? This isn't to say your WHY won't change over the years... But figuring out WHY you do it will help you keep on track with your goals on those darker days when you're feeling unmotivated and the last thing you feel like doing is going to the gym....

Now I'm curious. Tell us WHY? Why do you come to MadLab, and WHY is fitness a priority in your life?
