First of all, congrats to Baby Nat who kicked off her Regional career this weekend. So proud of you, Nat. You performed so well. Your career is just getting started!
On my end, it goes without saying this past weekend was more than a little bit disappointing. But I’ve been here before. I’ve competed in enough different competitive sports my entire life — from gymnastics, to track and field, to basketball, to rowing, and CrossFit —to know that some weekends just aren’t your weekend. I used to think CrossFit was all about physically pushing your body. It’s not. It’s just as mental as anything, and this past weekend my body and mind weren’t able to perform the way they had been in training, leaving me to feel like a gymnast falling off the balance beam on every difficult skill in her routine.
But enough about the competition. The one thing I’ve learned about a disappointing weekend is that when I get knocked down, my family and friends step up more than ever to offer their kind words of support, advice, encouragement and consolation.
Receiving your texts and e-mails helped me through the weekend more than you know.
One thing I found particularly interesting about the array of messages is how every person has a unique approach to the way they supported me. Some people use soft, kind words, others use humour, others still remain men and women of few words. Others, still, like Sheppy welcomed me home with homemade spaghetti.
One notable humorous texts: My new client Joey (fireman who has probably asked you to roll out his hamstrings after a workout) essentially asked me WHAT HAPPENED out there. “I was following along online. Was wondering if that was you or me doing the workouts,” he joked.
The point is, I love how your uniquely beautiful personalities shone through in your messages.
Each of your words/texts/messages/conversations helped me gain a little bit better perspective about the weekend, and allowed me to feel loved in the process.
I’ve often wondered if someone read my texts aloud to me without me knowing who sent them, if I’d be able to guess who sent the text. Since you all know many of the people in this community, too, I’m giving you the opportunity to guess who said what.
These 11 in particular, really highlight the personality behind the sender. Post to comments who said what (the list of the 11 associated people is as follows):

1. “I thought about you all weekend, wondering how you were doing. I am really proud of how you persevered and battled through. It isn’t easy.”
2. “Your central nervous system has a fight or flight response. Anybody could be strong enough to lift a 400-lb. deadlift, but our nervous system gets scared because it thinks you’re in danger. And maybe with all the cameras and announcers and bright lights, your nervous system thought it was in danger.”
Me: “So you mean my nervous system is to be blamed for not wanting me to perform?”
“Sort of.”
3. “Sending you all the love from the moon and back. Your self-defeating thoughts are lies. You are good enough…Go out there and be the best Emily Beers May 30th, 2015 has for you. You’ll be at peace when you let your best be just that – your best.”
Me: “Thanks for your support….Rough weekend but I survived.”
“Ha. That’s exactly how I feel about my dating life.”
4. After expressing I’m retiring after this weekend: “You’ll be back training for next year in a few months. Like Mickey Mantle in 73. … Have a drink.”
5. “Keep in mind, even the best golfers or tennis players get knocked out in the first round or don’t make he cut. It’s just unfortunate CrossFitters only get one tournament a year.”
6. “Breathe. These things happen. I cannot imagine how you are feeling but keep your chin up. Go out there today and PLAY! You can kill this part. We love you and are so proud of you. GO have some fun and come see me for a hug.”
7. “You can do it.”
8. “Why do you compete?”
Me: “I need something scary and challenging in my life. What do you do that’s scary and challenging?”
“I date you.”
9. “Did you #bringthetoms?” “YOU GOT THIS, WOMAN.You have literally five hundred peeps who all believe in you. Kill this shit. Dooo it!”
10. “You’re a total babe. You are cool, calm and relaxed. Just a little bloody.” “On a mid-day note: My dream came true today witnessing one of my dearest girlfriends run on a treadmill during non-infommercial hours.”
11. “Been watching and thinking of you all weekend, dude. Proud of you. Can’t wait for cocktails by the pool this week. Big hugs.”
Thank you to everyone for your support! Your words are more than words to me.
